The Story of

Ziv Shilon

Photographed with Benjamin Netanyahu

A day before he completed his term as a company commander in the Givati Brigade, Captain Ziv Shilon was critically wounded during operational activity in the Gaza Strip.

As the sun rose, Ziv opened a gate to allow the IDF troops to enter Israeli territory from the Gaza strip. He did so to prevent the lives of his soldiers from being endangered. He instructed them to stay about 250 meters behind, whil he opened the gate. After advancing three steps, everything exploded. The barbed wire that was attached to the fence had activated the improvised explosive device (IED). Though he was seriously injured - he lost both of his hands and sufffered additional injuries, Ziv heroically continued to function and manage the rescue of other soldiers from the field.

When he awoke, he realized that his life had changed forever. After the danger of death had passed, the struggle for his life had begun. For two years, Ziv underwent over 17 surgeries and intensive rehabilitation. The process of his rehabilitation is a wonderful and inspiring story about the power of the soul and coping with severe challenges.

Ziv is a fascinating, articulate lecturer with an impressive presence and is among the most sought-after and appreciated young lecturers in Israel.
